In the news this evening:

Jaywalkers on Kings Road, SW3 were fatally struck by a London Transport bus this afternoon when the driver of the vehicle was distracted by a passenger's witty remark. Metropolitan Police have identified the victims as Joanna Crawford, 29, and Cliff Mayall, 26, of Belgravia. The accident occurred at approximately 1500 amidst the crowded street full of market shoppers. Police have yet to reveal if the driver will be charged.

Edgware residents are aghast over the discovery of a mutilated body off the M1. Police found the body of a man in his mid to late twenties on Friday night in the ivy beside the Brent Cross Shopping Centre. Persons with any information of interest to police are urged to ring 999 or the CrimeSolvers line on 0171 403 8299.

Several MPs toured a Sunbury secondary school today, calling for raises in education standards throughout the British Isles. MP Thomas Fowkes of Tonbridge called Britain's current system of evaluation "outdated" and "inadequate". The re-elected Labour government has no current plans for education reform.

Under pressure from neighborhood officials, London Regional Transport has arranged to keep the Latimer Road tube station in West London open until 0200 on Friday and Saturday nights. Residents argued that recent gentrification of the Latimer Road area and spillover of pub crowds from nearby Shepherd's Bush necessitate train service through early morning. The station had previously closed at 2300.

Since the recent petrol-bombing of a temple in Southall, Sikh leaders from the London area have been meeting to discuss a possible cease-fire between conservative fanatics and the majority of temple clergy. So far this year, Sikh extremists have claimed the lives of five London residents, the youngest, a 15 year old from Brixton. Sikh extremists have been enraged by recent relaxations of once strict codes, such as the introduction of furniture in one temple in Thamesmead. Tavinder Singh, 39, a Sikh official from East London, said of the cease-fire, "It is more idyllic chatter than earnest desire for progress."

Entertainer Clive Innes opened his fifth season of "The Races," his award-winning musical theatre production, in London's West End Friday night. Races, a humourous look at the world of civil service, stars Olivia Warren and Edmund Paxton. It has been well received by both audiences and critics. "The Races" runs twice daily through August at the Albery Theatre.

Expect steady rain through Sunday, with unseasonably cool temperatures from 15-20 at night and 22-24 during daylight. Winds will be calm, with slight breaks in the clouds late Saturday. For the complete London area forecast and forecasts for over 300 cities world-wide, visit LondonNightly.com.

Leaving town this weekend? Travelers are being advised to avoid the M25 between Uxbridge and Watford until Monday morning's peak period. Crews will be working on repaving the outer lanes in both directions around the clock, resulting in varying delays and closures.

Sadly, London Nightly would like to bid adieu to Gwendolyn Petersen, our executive producer. Gwendolyn will be leaving us for Los Angeles, California to co-produce a documentary on the American penal system. An excellent journalist and ingenious artist, she will be missed.
